Badminton tournament 2011

West London Bangladeshi Association (WLBA) held their first ever badminton tournament on Sunday 26th June 2011 at Brunel University. The purpose of this event was to promote sporting activities (specially badminton) to the local Bangladeshi community. The aim of WLBA was to encourage the local community to take up more sports for exercise, have fun, stress less and meet new people. This event was a friendly men’s double tournament focused mainly for the beginner & intermediate level players.

There was a big demand for this type of event with a total of 32 teams of doubles entering the tournament, the majority within West London. The tournament began with a group stage round, which is never easy to manage. Then winners of the group stage went through to the knock out stage with last 16, Quarter Finals, Semi Finals and Final.

WLBA gave away a Badminton Racket (Yonex Arcsaber 10) as a prize to the winner of the raffle ticket draw. This became very popular amongst the people that were present at the tournament, as everyone wanted to win this amazing racket.

Special guest Rt Hon John Randall (MP of Uxbridge) attended the event at the opening of the tournament. His presence and speech was a great ecouragement to all the players taking part in this event.

Later during the tournament The Worshipful the Mayor of Hillingdon, Cllr Mary O’Connor MBE attended the event. The Mayor took the time to go around the sports hall and speak to all the players and guests who were present. Her presence inspired the players and also the main organisers of this event.

WLBA would like to thank both John Randall MP & The Mayor for their presence at this event. Encouraging positive feedback was received from players due to their presence. WLBA would like to wish them both well for their future.
